The Wildfire Obeyed!

Today is our season finale! This episode is so special as we brought in Kim Dotson to share her experience of being caught in the middle of the Spokane, Washington wildfires.

Uh and we are so excited because we have our friend with us all the way from Spokane, Washington, Kim Dotson. We're glad you're here with us.

It's awesome. We have both been invited previously to speak at the conference in Spokane, Washington, that Kim has put on a couple of years in a row now, which is awesome. I didn't miss it this year because of baby Briar welcoming, being welcomed into the world. Um, but but here we are. And but we're at this conference together, and we don't ever get to see each other. And it was a great opportunity to say, hey, we're all together. Can we do this? Yeah. And uh so uh again, thank you. I already said that, but thank you for saying yes and uh and being our friend and for serving in ministry and doing all the things that you do.

Yeah, exactly. It is. Um, we are so professional. I talk about sometimes, Kim, in our podcast, and like I'll say our we're in our podcast room. We don't even have a podcast room, it's the room we're doing our podcast in. So it's our podcast room, but we have great dreams of what someday might be like our studio room or something, and right now it's whichever home we're in.

It's VJ. It's it's it is. You're right. Okay, I guess no, seriously. Um we love Jesus, and you're gonna answer all these questions from us now, please. Uh okay, no, for all, uh, yes, the room is a mess, but it's fun. We're at the Christian communicators conference, uh, honing our skills on how to be better communicators. Amen. And to, you know, lead people to Jesus. So that's great news. Okay, so uh you live in Spokane, Washington, where all the wildfires are. So before we go into your most recent experience, tell us what's happening in Spokane right now.

Well, right now, I mean, it's not just in we don't have any active fires that I know of. I didn't look today, but um, this is wildfire season, and we have what they call red flag warning days when the wind is blowing. Actually, um, tomorrow my husband was trying to decide whether or not he's going to work because there's supposed to be so much wind. And if a fire starts, and they start for very various reasons, um, he wants to be there just in case. Like we're still a little bit raw. Less than a hundred miles from our home, there is a huge fire on a reservation right now. 90,000 acres, 1% contained. It's been going since last week. And um, so while the fires may not be close in proximity to our home, it's still like not far from where my parents live. Yeah. And yeah, it's, I mean, it's crazy.

So I've seen some things like just on social media and the news where like just the air is real thick. It's are you dealing with any of that? Like, is it yeah?

SPEAKER_03 4:03

In fact, when my husband called today, he said, So how's it going? And he said, Yeah, how do you like the air? Because when I left, like if you can remember at my house looking out over the mountains, yeah, you couldn't even see the mountains. Yeah, it's it was complete, it looks like haze, but the smoke is so much, it's just all throughout the valley. You cannot see across to the hills. Yeah.

Wow. That's that's devastating. You get up in the morning, you go to work and and go.

Yeah, just just doing my thing at work. And I can't remember if my husband called. Uh I think he texted me, and I happened to, it was not a busy day, and I happened to look at my phone, and it said he showed me what he did was he sent me a picture of his hand holding a piece of charcoal. And he said, There's a fire. We're we're gonna have to evacuate. And and I'm just and I had a patient, and uh, and the patient was like, Oh my gosh, do you need me to leave? Do you know uh what can I do? How can I help you? And I didn't even know what to think. My boss was there and I said, I I'm gonna have to leave. I I have to go. We're we're being evacuated. And um, and then the things like your phone is going off with notifications. I don't know how they know who to notify, if it was just everybody, if your phone number is from Spokane, but there's notifications of level three evacuations, which means leave now because this might be the only notification you get. Wow. Meanwhile, at home, what was happening is people were banging on doors, the cops, like sirens all over the place, and police just shifted into gear, came up through our neighborhood knocking on doors, you gotta get out, you gotta get out, you gotta get out. And Brad just happened to be, it was his day off. Wow.

And so how so, like, obviously, the fire had already started, right? So there was fires nearby, and how quickly did it go from fires nearby to you gotta get out, you gotta get out.

So fast because the wind was blowing. And when a fire like that takes over, like the it's like the fire creates energy of its own and it's blowing in every direction. You can't control those fires. And I think I told you that Brad was trained as a firefighter. I mean, that he was a volunteer firefighter, yeah, and he happened not not currently, no, but previously, previously, and he happened to be monitoring the radio traffic. Like, why does he do that? I don't know. He was just doing that, why? Because God was in control and he was monitoring the radio traffic from the fire department. Here's there's a fire in our area, and he had just gotten a haircut or his oil changed or something, and he went, uh-oh. I mean, he was off work that day. And he was had all these things he was gonna do, but instead he thought, I better get home. And he went home, and it was because it was a red flag morning day, the wind was blowing, and he did not have much time once he got home. I didn't even make it like how much time?

You said not much time, like five minutes, an hour. What is not much time? Two hours.

Well, from the time that I left, it was it was like less than a half an hour from from the time that he got that information, I think, until he was leaving. Wow. Because I mean, within a few minutes, I said, I gotta go. And I got my car, and I they had already had the roads blocked. Brad said, We'll meet you here at this safeway. And by the time I got there, he and my daughter, who came and brought a cat carrier for our other cat, um, were sitting at the safe way watching the hillside burn. Wow, I can't even imagine watching our neighborhood burn.

Right. Was there this thought of oh my gosh, I need to get such and such out of the home before, like did your mind go to there? Like, I want to save this or that, and things that were maybe precious to you.

SPEAKER_03 8:27

I don't remember if he told me. I think he told me what he grabbed. But in my mind, my the original wedding ring he bought me, I couldn't remember where it was. I just knew that he liked that that wasn't one of the things he grabbed.

Yeah.

And that I would have felt terrible. Um, but our cats, because you know, one of them, you never see that cat because she's afraid of people. And so he just had to be as calm as he could and trick her to put her in the bathroom. Um, yeah, our cats. That's my fear. Like, I can't even leave the house now because if there's a fire, who's gonna be like he's home to save the cats now, but that's a real thing.

Yeah.

And I did there wasn't my my original wedding ring. That was the only thing that I thought of. Um, like, and I I set a post and said he grabbed our little safe that's got all our important papers in it. Um, and I won't say where it is, I almost said it where it was.

We can edit that out. Where is that safe? Yeah.

SPEAKER_03 9:40

Um, so he grabbed the little safe, he grabbed our two cats, he grabbed our wedding photo, which just um just you know, to that my husband thought to grab our wedding photo and our Bibles.

I mean And that was it. Yeah. Two cats, a box of important papers, and a wedding photo. And our Bibles. And your Bibles.

And I and so that's just like does that not make you love my husband so much more?

I mean, I totally already loved him, but that's what he grabbed.

SPEAKER_03 10:18

I mean, in just moments, he had time to go down and turn the sprinklers on that water the whole hillside, you know, off the back of our house. That's all just fescue, that's just grass. And he turned the sprinklers on and he put them on as long like for as long as they would run. And our name, our neighbors saying, Do you think I should be worried about this? And he's like, Yeah, you need to be packing up your stuff. You need to be getting out of here. Our other neighbor, he the kid was just coming out and he's like, uh, we need to be leaving. That fire is coming. And and they turned their sprinklers on too.

That saved our homes. Wow. It sounds to me like in the in the moment of it all, like, um, you're reminding me of my mother in a way, of when tragedy hit her home, when she got the knock at the door to tell her that my dad had passed away. When we talk now, she can't remember so much because the news was shocking and all the details she can't can't really remember. And that's what I'm kind of hearing from you is like there's so many of the details, it's hard to remember when you look back because you're just in this mode of trying to do what you got to get done and survive. And and you started out your day like any other day. And I just wonder for those that are listening now, like as you're hearing Kim's story, um, you know, I'm just wondering how um how we take our days for granted sometimes, you know, like you you that are listening, wherever you are right now, or you you may be listening to this podcast in the morning time and on your way to work, um, whatever you may be doing. But I think it's just great for us just to remember that, not to take the day for granted because we never know what's going to happen. You know, thank the Lord for today, give him praise, pray for your family, be thankful for what we have because we never know when it's going to be taken away.

Absolutely. And you know, it was it this was something that we had both thought of that this is a red flag warning day. This is not the first time Spokane has had these crazy fires like this. And both of us had had the thought that, you know, what would we do? I mean, my first thought is the cats, I like that would break my heart to have to leave the cats if we couldn't trap them to get them out of the house. And and in my mind, I thought, you know, we should just have a little go bag because it could happen. It could happen late at night. I mean, you the the back of our house is just a forested area. And yeah, so the thought crossed our minds, but we didn't like you know, you just think nothing's gonna happen. But it will to your point, Denise. I I think that's huge. That we do take life for granted. We just, you know, we expect everything's gonna be okay. But uh in our lives, uh, working in EMS, I was a paramedic for years, he worked out in the field as well. And time and time and time again, we would see people who started their day normally and now they're gone. Like I can I just an example of seeing this little old man who crashed his car because he had a cardiac event. And in my mind, I thought this was, you know, I made up the story. Like he probably went met the men for coffee and he was on his way home and had this cardiac event. And now we're doing CPR, and he's not coming home to his wife today. I don't know if he was married or not, but you know, we just talked these stories and yeah, and I learned just that fast, and that that's kind of how we lived, just that fast. Your life could change on a dime.

Well, you know, not uh not to be obviously morbid about all of it, but I mean, but we literally are not promised tomorrow. We're not promised the next breath. Exactly. And so it is something that we should take for, you know, life is precious. Our every day we should be grateful for it. And we don't often live like we're grateful for today. And but what a reminder that we need to and to cherish our people and in our homes and just just to be grateful for the day that we have today. And if tomorrow comes, great. But um, but but be grateful for today. And I think that's just a great reminder. Uh somebody from my Sunday school class recently, they went to church and went to Sunday school, came home and took a nap, and he just fell asleep on the couch and died. And like she got up in the recliner, you know, from the recliner and went on, was gonna cook dinner. And a couple hours later, she's like, I need to, I need to wake, you know, my husband up. And she went over to wake him up and he was gone to be with the Lord. You know, like you like you just you're you just don't know how life could change in an instant. And uh, but you know, praise the Lord. Spoiler alert, uh, your house did not burn down. Right. And uh so that is great. But how were there homes in your neighborhood that did burn or like yeah, so interesting.

Our neighbor uh down the hill from us is a Christian. Our next door neighbors are renters and they're Christians, and the next neighbor to them is a friend who's a Christian. There are other Christians in the neighborhood, but we're like, and and so yes, we had our sprinklers on. I mean, the fire literally came up to that property line. There were trees burning, but it literally came up to that property line. Our next door neighbors had sprinklers out as well, and um, and that was spared. Our next door neighbor, she was talking to our daughter on the phone, and her daughter and she was just freaking out. And her daughter said, You are not, you stop that. You just stopped that. And her daughter was praying right then, right there, rebuking the flames, and said, You are not, you do not have authority over this home. We are Christians, you don't have authority, and that fire did not cross her lawn. Now, the fire was so hot that it melted her siding in the back of the house, and the house next to her burnt completely down, and the siding on the side of her house is completely melted. But it did not cross her property line. Wow. And so then, so that house burnt down. There's six houses in a row up the hill that right next to us. So our house survived, our next door neighbor's house survived, Kim's house survived, and six houses in a row burnt. And the fire then jumped across the street, and um, an ember landed on a planter box. That planter caught the house, the side of the house on fire. It went through the um attic in the garage because all these houses are burning at the same time. So it's shooting every house across the street from those houses that burnt to the ground. Their siding is all melted, the front of their homes melted. And then it went over the hill down into this swell. That whole swell burnt, which then the fire jumped over to the next neighborhood and houses in that, the next neighborhood over, and another one across the street, gone. Wow. Gone.

Any were there any um fatalities in that?

SPEAKER_03 18:09

One one, yeah. Uh, an older woman who was not gonna leave her home. And and my husband read about it, and I I I don't think the her husband was home, but he wasn't gonna force her, but she was a Christian and she said, if I die, I know where I'm going. It's okay. Wow. And she died. Wow. Wow.

And we've been in your neighborhood before when we're a beautiful neighborhood, beautiful view. Uh and all your homes are close together. Um, and so when you put a video out on uh social media, there's it was like you're coming around with the camera, and it's like all these burnt houses like burned to the ground, nothing left of them, and then seeing cars completely burnt up, and then all of a sudden, as you're seeing all this stuff that burnt, and then next thing you see is y'all's house. It's like our Barbie dream house. Yeah, you start seeing all these all these six homes that are together. And so just to think, like just a visual for those that you're that are listening, is these houses are so close together, and the fact that your six homes stayed untouched other than the heat and the meltdown or whatever on some of the siding, your homes are still standing when all of those around you were completely burnt to the ground. It's just a miracle of God, and it's just really an amazing uh story. Yeah, it's awesome.

So were you I'm trying to bring it like were you mourning what could be lost or what you thought might be lost, thinking about your fire? Like you got out with two cats, a box of important papers, your Bibles, and a wedding picture. That's it. Were you thinking like you just remodeled your like I just think about the the room you just remodeled and you know the the bunk beds and like I'm like I haven't even got to stay there yet? And so, like, are you were you thinking? Oh my goodness, like what were you thinking? What what was going through your mind in that? Or or were you not thinking?

SPEAKER_03 20:10

Yeah, I was thinking the one thought that I had as I left that I didn't know where my original wedding ring was. I knew that it would be here or here or here or here, and and I felt bad because and I couldn't even say anything to my husband. Yeah, um, everything else, I mean, literally, I I just we had the clothes on our backs, yeah, and like you know, no toothbrush, no toothpaste, no just the shoes I was wearing at where I was wearing scrubs that day to work and no clothes, but you know, and I and I just said it's just stuff.

Yeah, I love that. I I think the reason why I asked that is I remember you saying that one time is it's just stuff. And I love that because for me, it just shows like where your heart is um in in just life, you know, and you you're not wrapped up in earthly possessions and you have a beautiful home, and and I am blessed that I've got to stay there and and enjoy it and had smash burgers, you know, like fine times. But but you're you were not focused on stuff.

And well, and you know what's so sad about that is because like I remember putting a post up about, you know, there's we have stuff and we have a lot of stuff, so I can't really say, I mean, you know, count my shoes. I can't really say I'm not like all caught up in the world, and I have a lot of stuff.

But when but when the fire hit though, your treasure was not in your stuff, right? Your treasure, right? You know, that's where I'm like in your family. Like you got, like we we all we love stuff. Like we I just got a new house. We just remodeled too. Like I'm loving all the things. We just got new recliners. I'm like, bear, get the recliners out of that house.

I'm sitting here thinking right now that if this was BJ's help, she would definitely be like definitely be going, oh my gosh, all the hours I spent payton. Go in there and get this and get this, you know, like get my rolling pins off that wall. Oh, I'd want my boat. Oh, get my boat, get my Jeep. I'm thinking, did did Brad get his car? Did he roll that cloud? Oh, that was a beautiful ass.

So yeah.

So he has plastic.

He thought about doing it because he thought, well, at least if the house burns, he thought the house was gonna burn. Yeah. And he thought, at least if I take my car out of the garage, maybe it won't burn. But then what happened? He moved his truck out of the way. And I think, but then my daughter got there and said, come on, we're going. And so he was going to take the Camaro out. He was so happy he didn't take the Camaro out when we got back home because fighting the fire, the planes were dropping that bright pink fiery tart. Yeah. And if you remember seeing the picture of his truck, it was like the Barbie truck. Yeah. It was his black truck was completely pink. And that stuff is corrosive. So that Camaro would have killed him. Because of the white stripes on it, it probably would have stained him. Yeah. And see, he was so happy. I mean, so it was protected. Not only that, but I think I have my new little car in there too. Okay. And well, yeah, because you had already bought your new car. You had sold your bug. And like, what are you going to do? Yeah. What are you going to do? Yeah. It's just stuff.

It's just stuff. Well. But I love that again. I just think that it just is a confirmation of where your heart is. So, how did you keep your joy as you went through all of this? You always share so much joy in your post.

SPEAKER_03 24:03

Well, interesting. I don't know how long before it was, but God did this thing with me that I was going to start counting my blessings. Like that's what he was, that's what he that was my new dancing. I was going to start counting my blessings. Yeah. And to really appreciate what he has done in my life. The everyday simple things. And so my focus was on my blessings. It wasn't on the stuff. Yeah. I love that. I love that.

So he knew what was coming.

Right. Yeah.

You often have showed videos in your backyard, kind of. Y'all have a walking trail. So you and some of the ladies in the area, you'll walk this trail, hike up this mountain. Because um, most of your videos we see they're beautiful flowers, and you have some fun music playing in the background. We're just looking at God's beauty. And after the fire, you went up and you took a video, and you have where you're seeing just where everything has been the same trail. The same trail where all that beauty now has just turned to um ashes and it's just it's just burnt and it's gone. Like, have you had a moment since you've gotten back home that you've kind of walked up that trail and just having a moment of just thanking the Lord for all of his blessings and just being surreal that, oh my gosh, we just went through this and we survived.

Yeah. I that those moments will happen every day when I drive out of my neighborhood and look at the six houses that burned. Yeah. And that and walking through the neighborhoods because we don't always walk in the hills. We oftentimes walk in the neighborhoods and seeing the houses that used to be there that are now gone. And but the day when I walked the trail, and we and you actually can't walk the trail right now, it's still closed. Yeah, but we walked through the backside and came up the trail, just a little bit of the trail to show. I wanted to see, like from coming up the hill, how close did that fire actually get? We could see it in our ring camera out in the back, and we could see flames on the trees, and it literally stopped at our property line. And so what I did as I was walking up the hill, yeah, I was like, thank you, Jesus, because my because Brad was home, because Brad turned the sprinklers on. Our hillside didn't burn. I saw how close it came. It's like this, it like you look at it and just go, I there are no words for this, for the the gratefulness that I feel going, this is an act of God. God spared our home, even though it's just a home. That's what he did for us.

Yeah, I love that. And have you gotten all the pink stuff cleaned up?

SPEAKER_03 26:57

The pink stuff is cleaned up, but it's like we're hearing now um it it's it's corrosive and it's gonna ruin things. And are we do we need we didn't file a claim? And so we just think, what's this gonna be for real resale? Because eventually we'll sell the home and move to you know Texas, Texas.

SPEAKER_01 27:17

East Texas to be exact. Oh, there would be no reason to go anywhere. There you go. That's my girl. How did you pray through that? And what was your prayer through that?

SPEAKER_03 27:31

So uh that's a funny thing about me because when I get into when things are too much for me, like I'm the calm, cool, collected, I have to be. I deal with I deal with devastation, potential for devastation every day in medicine. But when it happens to me, I can't even pray for myself. And so, but I but I put out the word, we need prayer, because I like I can't even pray for myself. But I know that when I say that, I know that I can count on people. Denise, you said you had people praying. I knew I had people praying, I knew that my people were there for me, and I knew that I'm where where I couldn't do it, I knew that God had provided.

Yeah, I love that. And you had said, you know, that that you freeze. Yeah. And uh, but I think that that is so real. But again, it just reminds me and just confirms, and which is why I love you so much, is where your heart is. And and I think that's real. I think that when tragedy hits and we don't know how to pray or we don't have the words to pray, but you still knew the source of protection, the source of getting through this with or without your house burning, that you had people praying and you knew you could count on it. You had God has just put people in your life that you knew all it took was a text or a social media post, and you literally had people praying all over the country. Yeah. And and so I was like, what does that mean to you?

SPEAKER_03 29:06

It's everything. Like, because people were, I was getting texts and I could not, I couldn't keep up with the texts. And I just thought, okay, I don't, I don't want to be the drama one, but this is real. And so here's the deal. And to know that when I can't like from you, you when somebody asks me to pray, I pray right then because I because I I don't want to say I'm gonna pray and not do it. So let's just pray right now.

Yeah.

Um, and so having people who you know will pray that I'm it's that there's you can't put value on that. That's that's like I have my people. And what a I mean, there's my blessing. I love blessing. I love that.

So we are eight weeks away from unashamed hot springs. Um really excited and really scared. I'm like, eight weeks? That's not very long. Uh Kim, you came to Unashamed.

SPEAKER_03 30:12

You've been to how many Galveston, the inaugural, yeah, and uh Waco. Okay. Did I come to another?

SPEAKER_02 30:23

I didn't come to Grandbury. Okay, I didn't come to Granbury. But you you came to oh my gosh. So you came to Galveston the very first Unashamed that we had. I do remember that. Worship on the beach, yes, and everybody remembers the worship on the beach. And because that was amazing. Such a neat experience for us because we well, we still don't know what we're doing half the time, but we really didn't know what we were doing then. But you came, and so I guess it wasn't too bad because you came back again, right? Yeah, it was yeah, it was fantastic. What do you get out of going to a conference with friends?

SPEAKER_03 30:56

So um you're we're growing in the Lord together. That that it just solidified that bond because I really like I had just met you and we're sisters. So that like I could see you in your element to say, I want those people at my conference. Um, my people need to be blessed by by Denise and BJ. Um I learned, I learned like this is what I want the conference that I'm doing to look like. So you it's yeah, if anybody wants to plan a conference to get an idea, I mean it was mine was modeled after yours. And and then just growing in the Lord together, there's I mean, can you think of a better way to spend a weekend? Yeah.

I love women's conferences and just the getting away and just the the silliness and the spending time. And like when we weren't speaking, I remember we had a time in Galveston where we got to just sit out in the little lobby. It was me, you and Pam, and I had brought Pam a buttermilk pie, I think. That was me. Oh, I brought you the buttermilk pie.

And I want another one.

I just made four buttermilk pies right before I came here.

Because the place that we used to get them and close to home, yeah, they're gone. So yeah, I think you need to come to Spokane and build me a buttermilk pie. I will, I will build them.
